Cervicogenic Headaches
Cervicogenic headaches originate from dysfunction in the neck joints and surrounding muscles rather than primary headache conditions such as migraine. These headaches are often linked to posture, prolonged desk work, or previous neck injury.
Symptoms typically present as one-sided head pain starting in the neck and travelling toward the forehead, temple, or behind the eye. Patients may also notice neck stiffness, reduced movement, or headaches triggered by certain positions or sustained sitting.
At The Physio Group, our physiotherapists assess neck mobility, muscle control, and posture to identify contributing factors. Accurate diagnosis is important, as many headaches respond very well to physiotherapy treatment.
Management may include hands-on joint mobilisation, soft tissue treatment, posture correction, and targeted strengthening exercises to improve neck support and control.
Following our Reduce, Restore, Return model, treatment aims to reduce headache frequency, restore normal neck movement, and help patients return to daily activities with improved comfort and confidence.
When Should I See a Physiotherapist?
You do not need to wait until pain becomes severe or long-lasting before seeking physiotherapy. Early assessment often leads to faster recovery and helps prevent small problems developing into persistent injuries.
You may benefit from physiotherapy if you are experiencing:
- Pain lasting longer than 7–10 days
- Stiffness or reduced movement affecting daily activities
- Pain travelling into the arm or leg
- Recurrent episodes of neck or back pain
- Difficulty exercising, working, or sleeping comfortably
- Injury following sport, gym activity, or a road traffic accident
Many people try to manage symptoms themselves before seeking help, which can sometimes delay recovery. A professional assessment provides clarity, reassurance, and a clear plan tailored to your condition.
At The Physio Group, our aim is simple — to accurately diagnose the problem, reduce pain, restore movement, and help you return confidently to normal life as quickly and safely as possible.
